I imagine it stems from the history of euthenizations. I find it especially odd given the fact that if there was no racing, there'd be no beautiful greys to share our lives. As long as there is sufficient oversight and regulation, there is nothing inherently cruel about the sport, and I imagine they enjoy their careers far more than the cow who provided my dinner tonight.
