Her son was afflicted by the disease which involves an unexplained skin condition where the symptoms range from having the sensation of bugs crawling beneath the skin to severe itching. There were some medical professionals that even accused Leitao of making up the symptoms just to get attention from medical professionals.

Leitao continued to examine the strange fibers growing from her son’s skin. She continued to apply ointment to reduce the itching as much as possible. But was still not able to find a way to stop the condition. She formed a foundation to encourage more research for the disease which she named.
